Asus just dropped Zephryrus and ROG Strix laptops with 300Hz refresh rates. Nope, you didn’t read that wrong: The new Asus Zephyrus and ROG Strix laptops will feature 300Hz refresh-rate panels. Although Asus is unlikely to be the only laptop maker with a 300Hz panel at IFA Berlin, it’s the first to announce.
Asus said the 300Hz refresh is 25 percent higher than on 240Hz panels, and 5X the refresh of old-timey 60Hz panels. Running at 300Hz with Vsync on, Asus said visual tearing and stuttering is minimized due to the screen’s ability to redraw a new frame every 3.3ms. Asus said at 300Hz, the 3.3 timing “matches” the 3ms response time of the screen as well.
Rated at 25% faster than the current displays found on most esports gaming laptops, the new 300Hz panel will debut with a refreshed version of the ROG Zephyrus S GX701 later this October, followed by other Strix and Zephyrus gaming laptops later in 2020. Pricing on the laptops with the 300Hz panel was not made clear.
Thanks to the 300Hz panel, Asus is promising that gamers can experience quicker pixel transitions and reduced blurring when playing certain games. Specifically, that can add up framerates can add up to five times more frames than the traditional 60Hz panels found on traditional laptops like the Razer Blade Stealth lineup.
At IFA, the 300Hz machines Asus demoed included 15-inch and 17-inch flavors of the Strix Scar III packing Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 graphics cards. Alongside them, it showcased a 15-inch Zephyrus S GX502 and 17-inch Zephyrus S GX701. The 15-inch GX502 has a GeForce RTX 2070 GPU with the same boost clocks and wattage as the Strix, while the 17-inch GX701 has a GeForce RTX 2080.
Asus is no stranger to high-refresh-rate panels. Its first launched in 2016 with the G752VS, which featured a 120Hz IPS screen. Then the company conducted a project with chemical giant Merck, which catalyzed the development of a new liquid-crystal structure capable of pushing even higher speeds and laying the groundwork for the company’s first 144Hz gaming laptops.
To power such a fast display, the ROG Zephyrus S GX701 comes fitted with an Nvidia RTX 2080 GPU clocked up to 1,230MHz at 100W in Turbo mode. As for processors, this 17-inch gaming laptop will come fitted with Intel 9th Generation H-Series chips.
Alongside the Zephyrus S GX701, Asus has plans to release three other 300Hz gaming laptops including a smaller 15-inch Zephyrus S GX502 as well as 15- and 17-inch versions of the Strix SCAR III. Sadly, Asus has yet to announce pricing on any of these new machines.
